The year 2017 has begun on a positive note as PMPML Board has approved the roll-out of “MI Card” for the Passengers of PMPML in the recent held on 23rd Dec 2016. MI Card shall be rolled out in two Phases.
In Phase I, the contactless smart card will replace all the 3.5 to 4 Lac passes that are being issued annually into the MI Card. To ensure smooth roll-out, the MI Card will be issued to all the employees of PMPML, then employee and special passes issued by Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, then Senior Citizen, then General Passes and finally Student passes respectively.
All MI Cards will be personalized smart cards which will have the Photo, passenger’s name and any other information as may be required depending on the type of Pass.
To kick start this initiative, Hon. Mayor (Pune) Shri. Prashant Jagtap gave MI card to two lucky PMPML passengers. Also present on the occasion was the Hon. Municipal Commissioner Shri. Kunal Kumar.
In January 2017, all pass holder start apply for passes online in the next couple of weeks and after verification of the documents by PMPML, MI Card will be issued to the passenger. PMPML is targeting to complete all passes in the system to be converted into MI Card in the next 4 – 6 months and hope to complete this process latest by August 2017.
All pass holder will tap the MI Card on the Electronic Ticketing Machine (ETM) carried by the conductor to validate their passes. All the ticket checking staff will also be provided the ETM device to avoid any ticket-less travel. All the personalized passes will be non-transferable.
The passengers will pay INR 80/- initially for the personalized MI Card along with all the required documents for the type of pass they are applying along with Aadhar Card which is now compulsory for the issue of such passes.

Below are the various MI Card passes (designed approved) that will be issued.
In Second Phase, the MI Card will become an e-Purse which is a pre-paid card and which will allow passengers to pay for their bus tickets without cash by only tapping their MI Card on the ETM with the conductors. PMPML is planning to make travel in their buses completely cashless through MI Card, if not at least 80% of the 12 lac passengers in the next 6 – 8 months.
The new buses being inducted by PMPML shall have validators where passengers can just tap the MI Card at the door during entry and exit of the bus and the exact ticket cost would be deducted from the card, making bus travel seamless and hassle free in the future.
Passengers using MI Card shall be given discount on their ticket cost when compared to passengers paying by cash in the future. Once the roll-out is complete in PMPML, the MI Card shall also be accepted for payments in parking, retails, small municipal payments, retails and eventually Pune Metro once operational. A loyalty program is being designed for MI Card users to get free travel based on the spend on the Card.
